Golden peak | Heřmaň

The village of Heřmaň is located within the boundaries of South Bohemia about 6km northwest of Protivin on the road from Protivín to Ražice, with the railway Protivín – Písek going through the north part of the village. The stream Blanice, which flows into the Otava at Putim, is found north of the village.
Heřmaň is an historic settlement dominated by the Church of St Jiljí, already mentioned as parish seat in 1254. In 1330 this originally late-Romanesque church was elevated from Royal property to property of the Royal canonry of St Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad.
At one time Heřman was a town. In 1640 it was almost destroyed by the Swedish army and it became a village. It later came into the ownership of Adolf of the Schwarzenbergs. After 1850 Heřmaň became an independent village.
The poet Jan Čarek was born, lived and buried in Heřmaň and a plaque marks his family home. Film and theatre director Václav Krška also lived and was buried here.
The village has an area of 705 ha and a population of 230.
The family-run Benešovský mlýn lodging house offers recreation and accommodation, and lodging for hikers is currently under construction. Local societies include the volunteer fire department, womens group and a branch of the Czech Gardeners association. These organisations also arrange events in the village cultural hall for children as well as adults.
Building plots for individual house construction and a sewage treatment works are currently under construction, while the sewerage system, water supply and local roads are to be renovated.
