History

The beginnings of the medieval Heřmaň are not clear enough (some sources show the first written mention about the village from 1227), a small brook was running through the village only in the 19th century and it bounded the early medieval settlement on itself. The small brook created the village axe, nevertheless the early gothic church, documented in written materials to the year 1254, presented the own substance of the village.

The town status has been documented since 1321 and it is led in the Theresian land register. In 1623 it was partly destroyed by fire and in 1640 it was plundered by Swedish troops and after the Thirty Years War the village character prevailed, which remained until today. Heřmaň is known as the birth place of the poet Jan Čarek (1898 – 1966) who was born here, was living here and his ash is laid in the recess of the grave yard church. Also Václav Krška a theatre and film director is buried.
Also the Red and Benešov Mill belongs to Heřmaň.
