History
The first written paper about the Putim existence is the deed of donation of the duke Břetislav (1092 – 1100). It is possible to guess about the time of settlement according to the vicarage which used to be probably a stronghold. The Celtic settlement (2nd century B.C.), Roman (1st century B.C), old Slavonic from the 8th century is documented. The early gothic St. Lawrence Church comes from the 13th century and it used to serve as a defending fortification during wars. A lot of houses were built in the late Peasant Baroque period. The baroque shields are kept on several farmhouses to these days. The local cemetery is worth mentioning with the Jan Cimbura grave and the charnel house (piously arranged bones of the Thirty Years War victims).
Putim is also well known thanks to the Jaroslav Hašek novel “Good Soldier Švejk Destiny” and from the folk song “Když jsem já šel tou putimskou branou = When I Walked through the Putim Gate (but you will find this gate in the nearby Písek. :o)
